1990 LX convertible with 5.0 - jumped in and rolled all four windows down and started my journey. Drove 20 miles and pulled into the garage. The windows would not go up - none of them. And the door locks wouldn't function. The next morning the windows went up a little then stopped halfway. I pulled the door panels and now the locks work, but the windows don't. That would indicate it's NOT the 20 amp circuit breaker, right? What the hell would make all four windows just stop working? Couldn't be a motor - all four would have had to die at the exact same time. Shouldn't be the circuit breaker because the locks work. I read something about making sure the negative terminal on the battery was mounted to the body to ensure full power - and it is. Where the hell do I start with this? Thanks a million!

Where could I find out more about the relays for the power windows? Any good sources for diagrams or troubleshooting steps? Thanks!

Check the following diagram out.#14 in the fuse panel is a circuit breaker for the power windows safety relay(used on convertible models only)This circuit breaker might be faulty, not allowing the windows to go up all the way.I believe it prevents the windows from rolling up past the halfway point when the top is being raised back to the closed position. If the top were to get misaligned with the windows while closing, they could get shattered.Im taking a guess here of course, but that sounds like a good purpose for the safety relay & circuit breaker.Locate #14 in the fuse panel on this diagram and follow it to the relay. It also goes towards fuse #15 too,so make sure its not blown.

Wbrockstar - great info thanks. I'll start with that and see what happens. I think I found more on the relay also. Much appreciated!

Great info Almost Stock.I didn't have the slightest clue where it was located,I just knew the wiring was shown running from that circuit breaker then on to the relay. Are there any other relays you can think of that might be located in that same area or close by,that you know of??When it comes to components and wiring under/inside or behind the dash,I'm totally lost. That's the reason I asked.

Spectacular Almost Stock! Thanks very much - I don't think I would have ever found that. Does it make sense to replace a working relay as a preventative measure? Or leave it alone if it's working fine? Thanks again!

Leave it to Ford,to put a relay under a damn speaker. Now,if somebody was trying to locate this thing and didn't have access to a wiring diagram, pictures or tech article (like shown in the previous post)it would be a very time consuming job to find this relay.Think about it,who's gonna search under a dash speaker for a damn relay, not me.

Agreed! I'd been looking all over that panel around the fusebox with a flashlight. I even took the drivers seat out so I could climb under the dash and see in there better. Not sure I'da found that at all.

The only reason I found the window relay for the convertible was my EVTM has a location index and the one connectors C 417 says LH Cowl panel.
To my knowledge most of the relays are more explicit with there location in the Shop Manual or EVTM the Convertible for some reason seems to be a little bit more vague with some of there locations.

That's a tough call .. I'm inclined to leave things if they're working fine, but if there is any doubt in my mind at all I'll replace it.

Thanks much. Replaced the circuit breaker after I found a door wire had been pierced by a door armrest bolt. All good now! Easy peasy.

Glad to hear you got it fixed so easily & quickly.Otherwise you might have been up to your ears in dash wiring trying to track the problem down.
