Howdy y'all I drive a 98 ZX2 w/126k mi auto trans. I bought it with 90k mi on it for $650 because the guy had trouble selling it due to replacing the timing belt w/o replacing the tenisioners. It jumped a couple teeth but it's a 2.0L. New belt and tensioners. Runs well most of the time. Just need a few pointers to troubleshoot a couple issues.
First, it's not really a bad issue, but more annoying than anything. The headlights were dim when I first got it. Replaced. Still dim. Discovered all lamps turn on in pos 1. No change in pos 2. Somehow directly connected to battery from switch with no relay. Relay is installed. Installed work around by directly grounding relay with a separate switch. Headlights are as bright as they should be. Everything works. What things should I look at in order to correct the wiring? I want parking lights on in pos 1 and all lamps on in pos 2.
Secondly, a headscratcher that I keep throwing money at. Fluctuating idle between 500-1100rpm. Sometimes dies after starting and putting in R/D. CCRM inspection looks good. PVC replaced. Evap hoses replaced. IAC replaced. Coil replaced. Fuel pump test good (30-45psi). Do these cars just do this?
I would appreciate any help. It's a good car just hard to figure out...

Welcome to FEOA. It's good to see that you're giving the car credit where due. A lot of people would just give up because learning is hard...:D. Thankfully, wiring IS my forte

First thing I would suggest is tracking down a wiring diagram for the headlights. Gut feeling says that a previous owner 'fixed' it. Wife's 97 Escort has a similar issue in that the highbeams are on whenever the headlights are on. So I got the 97 FSM CD iso through some crazy Russian site and extracted the wiring diagrams relevant to the headlights and put them all together for easy comprehension. 97-98 should be the same, but CHECK YOUR WIRE COLORS!!!

Just to be certain of the symptoms, this is what it is doing?
Position 1 (sidemarker/gauge lights normally on): Headlights are dim, Sidemarker/Gauge lights are ON
Position 2: (headlights normally on: same result as position 1

The stock headlight switch supplies a GROUND to the Park lamp relay (pin 85), which feeds power to the gauge backlights. It also supplies a GROUND to the Headlight relay (one of the coils pins, 85 or 86), so it can feed power to the Left/Right headlight fuses.

Then it hits the Dimmer switch (stock is a DPDT switch here, kind of odd) that splits it into high and low beam. HB indicator & fog light enable signal are tied into the driver's side headlight wiring. Passenger side is just a straight shot from the dimmer switch.
